The excitement and enthusiasm of summer internships is an elaborately played out drama. With ample instances of sincere and clever jargon mugging, reorganizing statements and blurting out the same in GDs faintly hoping to dupe the corporate person, swearing by the 4Ps and displaying levels of willingness to scale even mountains to conduct surveys, it appears no less then an acting academy. Few honest souls who are modest to admit the guerilla tactics they employed and successfully evaded outright elimination, are cheered and epitomized as the legendary “bullshitters”. Welcome to MBA life.
Now that most of us are almost midway into the summer internships, surely there have been several moments of truth which I believe have stared on our faces and before we know what’s happening, the realization dawns that the ways of the world have mocked us once again. This, I am happy, is not true for all. But then we are here to discuss about the masses, so let’s continue the rambling…..
It’s funny to see how people change their priorities with the slightest shift in the wind. Starting with only big corporate houses, then accommodating anyone who pays stipend and skipping a few gradually degrading stages in between to anyone who just gives an internship anywhere in the world. Between few of us whose prayers were answered as far as summer internships are concerned and most of us who just managed to land a internship, lies a plane of realization that reinforces how unimportant and expendable baby mba’s are to the corporate world. But I must highlight the chosen few who are keenly engaged into proving their worth and actually generating value out of their assignments for themselves and for the firms they are working for. Cheers to them. Coming back to the masses, where the joy lies, let me share some revelations….
1. Team working lessons never had it so good. People share one internet connection over a working day of 8 hrs. Cheers.
2. Idea generation takes a new high. People have almost harnessed the scope and scalability of Web 3.0 and day long meetings with CEOs is just another day at the office
3. People set out at night to take surveys at CNG stations, coz its too hot during the day. Salute to sincerity.
4. People are honored for closing deals and showered obscene praises on Facebook.
5. Fitness regimes have never been so well charted and obeyed day in and day out. Some wise soul once uttered…”Time is of essence”. Never before has this been understood so well.
6. Some sincere poor souls curse the nuances of fate which have chosen to tie them to assignments which can be summarized by a single word “crap”.
7. Then, there is the happy lot. My favourites. Who have no work, need not even go to office and even do nothing! Thou shalt be blessed by the Lord!....Who can, not like “jiyo aur jine do” firms?
Did I hear anyone saying summers are not exciting?
